、it that some children perform much better than others at school?M: Obviously, certain children are brighter than others, but it's not as simple as that. A lot of emphasis is placed on intelligence measured by tests.W: The so-called IQ test?M: Yes. Basically they are intended to test linguistic a

、nd numerical skills, so some children are bound to suffer. This is very unfortunate. A child with an average IQ may turn out to be successful when he grows up.W: What you're saying is that some children have abilities that are not easy to measure, that aren't appreciated.M: Precisely. And if

、 these skills are not spotted sufficiently early, they cannot be developed, That's why, in my view, there are so many unhappy adults in this world. They are not doing the things they are best at.W: I see.M: But at school, only those children who are good with words and numbers will probably do w

、ell in school examinations.W: Right. Is there anything a parent can do to help in this case?M: Yes. In my opinion, a child should be judged on his individual talents. After all, being happy in life is putting skills to good use, no matter what they are.1B本题考查意图。根据原文“Basically they are intended to te

、st linguistic and numerical skills.” 根据原文“That's why,in my view, there are so many unhappy adults in this world. They are not doing the things they are best at.” 从原文中“But at school, only those children who are

、 good with words and numbers will probably do well in school examinations.” Conversation 2W: Hi Stan, where have you been?M: Oh, just at the Student Union office trying to see if I can catch you there. I also tried to find out if professor Ste

、infield has any old exams from years ago.W: Why don't you just ask me? I took that class last semester and aced it.M: Yeah. you ace all your subjects. But the exams change from year to year, don't they?W: True, but the style is pretty much the same from year to year.M: So tell me all about t

、he process of prostaglandin. I can barely even pronounce it, let alone explain it.W: Hey, I am no expert but what she'll be mainly looking for is that you know how it affects the digestion, reproduction, and immune systems.M: What kinds of questions might she ask?W: Well, for example, you'll

、 probably have to say how prostaglandin, if over-produced can give you headaches and fevers and stuff.M: Speaking of headaches. I think I'm getting one now. Can you give me an aspirin?W: Well, it's probably because you have too much prostaglandin, Aspirin blocks prostaglandin production.M: W

、ell, I'm sure it's this Biology class that's doing it.W: Hey, I've heard you're no slouch at poetry. You get me through my course in 19th century poetry and I'll make you an expert in Biology.M: It's a deal. Where shall we begin? Poetry is up my alley.

、just at the Student Union office trying to see if I can catch you there.” 根据原文“Why don't you just ask me? I took that class last semester and aced it.” aced it意为“成绩为 A”。 由原文男士自己所给出的原因“I'm sure it's this Bio

、logy class that's doing it.” 根据文中“. it's probably because you have too much prostaglandin”(可能是因为你前列腺素过多)很容易误选A,但这只是女士的猜测,而非真正原因。 文中最后提到“I've heard you're no slouch at poetry. You get me through my course in 19th century poetry and I'll make you a

、n expert in Biology.” Conversation 3M: What inspired you to act?W: It must have been born in me. I've been doing it since I was 7 y

、ears old. Maybe it was my family. Who knows? I just know when I saw a stage for the first time, I wanted to be on it.M: How do you balance your life between family and your career?W: How? I don't know how. I just know I do it. But it takes work. I have a great husband, a great set of parents and

、 in-laws, and obviously I have help with a nanny. It's not easy but there are others who do it every day and don't have a high profile job as I do.M: Does it ever get difficult to balance?W: Yup. But what parent has it easy? I just never make the difficulty of it all an obstacle. As I said,

、I just do it.M: Has that always been your philosophy? To simply work through the" obstacles", no matter what? Just do it?W: Yes, but I also find "she works hard for the money" or "she's overcome so many obstacles" a bit overused. I know it allows me to stand out in

、a crowd when the sea of faces can seem so similar, and I know it serves a purpose in inspiring others who might face the same obstacles I faced while growing up.M: You're a tough dame. 文中她讲到了“I just never make the dif

、ficulty of it all an obstacleAs I said,I just do it.” 根据原文中提到的“I know it allows me to stand out in a crowd when the sea of faces can seem so similar, and I know it serves a purpose in inspiring others who might face the same obstacles I faced while growing up.”

SECTION B PASSAGESPassage 1 The first English dictionary, called an Alphabetical Table of Hard Words, was published in 1604. The dictionary actually contained only about 3,000 difficult words, each followed by a one word definition. The author, Robert Cawdrey,

、 made no attempt to include everyday words in his dictionary. No one, he reasoned, would ever have to look up a word in a dictionary if he already knew the meaning of the word. During the 1600s more dictionaries were published. Each followed Cawdrey's lead and presented a few thousand hard words

、. Around 1700 one dictionary maker, John Kersey, did define easy words as well as hard ones. But until the 1750s all dictionaries were rather simple and not very valuable. A man named Dr. Samuel Johnson changed all this. In 1755 Dr. Johnson produced the first modem dictionary. He includes in his dic

、tionary all important words, both easy and hard, and he gave good meanings. By the end of the 1700s most dictionary makers had followed Johnson's lead. The 1800s saw the greatest improvement in the quality of dictionaries. In England scholars planned and prepared the Oxford English Dictionary, a

、 twenty-volume work. One of the most popular features of the Oxford English Dictionary is its word histories. It traces the history of each word from its earliest recorded use up to the time of the printing of the dictionary. 11A情景事实题,短文的开篇中提到:“The first English dictionary, called an Alphabetical Tab

、le of Hard Words, was published in 1604.” 根据原文“The dictionary actually contained only about 3,000 difficult words, each followed by a one word definition.”

文中最后提到“One of the most popular features of the Oxford English Dictionary is its word historiesIt traces the history of each word from its earliest recorded use up to the time

、of the printing of the dictionary. Passage 2 There were several important discoveries in the early part of last century that helped geologists develop a more accurate picture of the earth's interior. The first key discovery had to do

、with seismic waves. Remember they are the vibrations caused by earthquakes. Well, scientists found that they travel thousands of miles through the earth's interior. This finding enabled geologists to study the inner parts of the earth. You see, the studies revealed that these vibrations were of

、two types: compression, or P waves, and shear, or S waves. And researchers found that P waves travel through both liquids and solids, while S waves travel only through solid matter. In 1906, a British geologist discovered that P waves slowed down at a certain depth but kept traveling deeper. On the other hand, S waves either disappeared or were reflected back. So he concluded that the depth marked the boundary between a solid mantle and a liquid core. Three years later, another boundary was discovered that was between the mantle and the earth's crust. There is still
